Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States; 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Blevins was diagnosed with melanoma, which is a rare type of skin cancer — only about 1% of skin cancer cases — but accounts for a large majority of skin cancer deaths. However, if people do have suspicious skin spots or any other symptoms concerning for skin cancer, they should talk to their primary care doctor or dermatologist. Lacks, a Black mother of five, was dying of cervical cancer in 1951 when doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore biopsied tissues from her cervix. Whatever the case, cells from the research sample were later found to be highly valuable because they were the first that could divide indefinitely in a laboratory. And cells are “de-identified,” unlike Lacks’s cells, which are named HeLa to this day. What’s still debated is whether people have a legitimate ownership claim in the first place.

A lesion that was found and removed during first lady Jill Biden's outpatient surgery last week was a "non-cancerous growth," according to a medical memo her press secretary released Wednesday. The lesion, found on Biden's left eyelid, had been sent out for a traditional biopsy, said Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the physician to the president. Results from the biopsy were "consistent with seborrheic keratosis,” O'Connor said in Wednesday's memo. He described the biopsied lesion as a "very common, totally harmless non-cancerous growth" that did not require further treatment. O’Connor said at the time that the procedure was a success and that “all cancerous tissue was successfully removed.”
